Ofsted Report

All Year 10 students study the following core GCSE English course. We deliver this in one academic year.

The Core Curriculum

This is a course which links speaking and listening, reading and writing, and the study of literature.  A core plan ensures that all students will be given the same opportunity to prepare for the AQA GCSE examination in English; most students will be expected to enter for either Cambridge IGCSE English Literature or OCR GCSE Media Studies upon completion of the course.

Assessment

Unit 1

Understanding and producing non-fiction texts (externally examined) 40%.

20% reading and analysing texts.

20% writing texts.

Unit 2

Speaking and Listening (internally marked controlled assessment)  20%.

Presenting, Discussing and Listening, Role playing.

Unit 3

Understanding and producing creative texts (internally marked controlled assessment)  40%.

20% Reading literary texts: 3 assessments covering a novel, poetry and a Shakespeare play.
20% Creative writing: 2 assessments.

Candidates may be entered at one of two tiers:

Higher Tier targeting grades A*-B.
Foundation Tier targeting grade C.

Progression

Success in this subject allows students to progress on to Sixth Form ’A’ level, Applied ‘A’ level, or other Level 3 courses at Northallerton College, or elsewhere. Many of our students progress to take the
subject in higher education.

In the summer term of Year 10, and upon completion of the core course, all students experience short sampler courses in English Literature and Media Studies. We then ask them to make a choice between GCSE English Literature and GCSE Media Studies. Acceptance onto these courses is dependent on their achieving at least a grade C in GCSE English. We will endeavour to provide their first choice but sometimes it may be necessary to take up a second choice. Those students who do not achieve a grade C, will sit GCSE English again, having followed an alternative course of study.

The courses offered in Year 11are outlined on the following page.
