Module 3 - Texts in Context
PHILIP
LARKIN – HIGH
WINDOWS (click
here for study booklet) Examination information and guidance
To be
examined in May, along with ‘Tis Pity She’s
a Whore, in a two-hour open book examination. [Allow one
hour for each text.] You will be asked to choose one question
out of two alternatives on each text.
Assessment Objectives for this text:
| AO1 |
to
communicate clearly the knowledge, understanding and
insight appropriate to literary study, using appropriate
terminology and accurate and coherent written expression. |
| AO2i |
to
respond with knowledge and understanding to literary
texts of different types and periods. |
| AO3 |
to
show detailed understanding of the ways in which writers’
choices of form, structure and language shape meanings. |
| AO4 |
to
articulate independent opinions and judgments, informed
by different interpretations of literary texts by other readers. |
The emphasis in assessment for High Windows is AO4, followed
by AO3, AO2i and AO1. Our methods of study and, eventually,
the examination questions are designed to focus on these
areas. A list of past questions on High Windows and the previous
set text, The Whitsun Weddings, is included in this booklet.
An essential
point to remember as you work on this text is that you
need to get into the critical habit of developing
and expressing your own views on Larkin’s poetry and
on other people’s opinions about his poetry. This is
what is required for AO4.
It is with this in mind that this booklet contains a number
of views, comments and opinions expressed about either Larkin
in general or High Windows in particular. You should consider
these and form your own response.
