Language, Thought & Sapir-Whorf - a brief dabate and lots of links to other sites - essential to any understanding of Language and Representation.

Module 1: Language and Representation

For this topic you will investigate how language might reflect social values and how it might contribute to maintaining or changing values.

You will study:

  • language used to describe: gender, race and people with disabilities
  • attitudes to political correctness
  • euphemism

Work will focus on both the language system (lexis, semantics and grammar) and individual texts. This topic will link with the consideration of matters of representation in individual texts in preparation for Textual Analysis tasks.
