In September we celebrated our Centenary year on the Grammar
School Lane site. The year was marked by events, big and
small, to celebrate 100 years of service to the local
community.
The new building on Grammar School Lane
was completed in 1909 at a cost of £7,046. It was officially
opened by the Archbishop of York on the 23rd
September 1909.
The new school acquired a new motto “Ex
Opera Felicitas” – “from work, happiness”, a new school
crest, and a new annual award – the Cuthbert Cross.
100 years later the original building
is known as A Block and is at the heart of the College which
now extends around it. The old school hall is now a
multi-media Learning Resource Centre and the original
classrooms host ICT suites.
The motto and school crest are
preserved as reminders of the colleges past. The Cuthbert
Cross is still awarded annually “to the boy and girl who by
loyal, chivalrous or honourable conduct has done most to
enhance the character and reputation of the school”.
Note: The original school which became
Northallerton Grammar School then Northallerton College can
be traced back to St Cuthbert’s Day (20th March)
1322. We look forward to Celebrating 700 years serving the
local community in 13 years time.
