Brief Outline
Biology is a popular course, combining well
with many other subjects, including Arts as
well as Sciences. It includes many topics
which were first introduced at GCSE, but
broadens and develops students’
understanding to much greater depth. It also
introduces a number of new areas and the
work at A2 level is significantly more
challenging than at AS level. Topics include
the biology of cells, heredity, evolution,
physiology of animals and plants, ecology,
biotechnology and disease.
Methods of Teaching
The course will involve discussion,
independent study, practical work,
model-building, problem-solving, use of
intranet activities and visual input via
Smart boards and videos/DVDs.
Assessment

Unit 2 - The Variety of Living Organisms
Unit 3 - Investigative and Practical Skills

What We Expect From You
Entry
requirements are at least Grades BB in GCSE
Science, and a commitment to learning and
participating positively in lessons. Since
the more advanced biological concepts are in
the second year, students need to gain at
least Grade D at AS to continue into the A2
year.
Future Prospects
Higher education opportunities in Biology
are plentiful. In the past, students have
gone on to study Medicine, Agriculture,
Animal Physiology and Nutrition, Veterinary
Science, Biochemistry, Food Science,
Microbiology, Nursing, Physiotherapy,
Genetics and various environmental courses.
One important point to remember is that many
universities prefer students to have A level
Chemistry for entry onto many of their
Biology courses.
